Boondocking, also known as dry camping or wild camping, is a type of RVing where you park your vehicle in a remote or non-designated area, without any hookups or amenities. It’s a great way to experience nature, save money, and get off the beaten path. However, boondocking requires some preparation, knowledge, and skills to ensure a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable experience.

Here are some tips and tricks for successful boondocking:

    • Choose the right spot: Look for public lands, national forests, Bureau of Land Management (BLM) areas, or other free or low-cost camping options. Check online resources, maps, and forums for recommendations, regulations, and safety tips. Avoid private property, crowded areas, or places with no access or cell coverage.
    • Get your RV ready: Make sure your RV is fully equipped and functional for off-grid living. Check your batteries, generator, water tanks, propane, and other systems. Bring a solar panel or a portable generator for extra power. Install LED lights, insulation, and ventilation to save energy and stay comfortable. Bring enough supplies, food, and water for your stay.
    • Be self-sufficient: Boondocking means being self-reliant and responsible for your own needs. Practice Leave No Trace principles, respect the environment and wildlife, and pack out your trash. Use a composting toilet or a portable toilet to avoid polluting the area. Bring a water filter or purification tablets to make sure your water is safe to drink. Use a propane stove or a campfire for cooking.
    • Stay safe: Boondocking can be rewarding but also risky, especially if you’re alone or in unfamiliar territory. Be aware of your surroundings, weather conditions, and wildlife. Carry a first aid kit, a map, and a communication device. Let someone know your itinerary and expected return. Avoid driving at night or in bad weather. Respect the quiet hours and other rules of the area.
    • Enjoy the experience: Boondocking is not only about survival but also about adventure, relaxation, and inspiration. Take the time to explore the surroundings, hike, bike, or fish. Watch the stars, listen to the birds, or read a book. Meet other boondockers or locals and share your experiences. Take pictures, journal, or draw. Create memories that will last a lifetime.

Boondocking is a unique and rewarding way of RVing that allows you to connect with nature, yourself, and others. By following these tips and tricks, you can maximize your boondocking experience and create unforgettable moments. Happy trails!
